Il Palazzo

Il Palazzo

Via dell’Immagine 2, Benabbio, 55022 (LU)

Built for the future.

The house dates from 1758, and Elisa Bonaparte, Duchess of Lucca and Napoleon’s sister, is said to have slept here because it was “the most beautiful house in the village.” Which is why the locals called it Il Palazzo. It is unique in the area for suffering no damage in the 1921 earthquake.

The property is substantial and imposing, full of wonderful features including old cotto floors throughout, chestnut beams and original doors; two galleried stone staircases with hand crafted handrails, and a games room. It even has a ‘conica’ – the original cotto clothes-washing ‘machine’, dating from 1794.

Outside, with access from the lowest level, is the large, walled garden, with a swimming pool, pergola and terrace, and views over the Alpi Apuane. There is also a private entrance from the road, with a stone garage, parking area and a large workshop below.
